The Mysteries of Rosario

Description

Rosario La Mejorana belonged to a generation of dancers around the turn of the last century who brought about a revolution in flamenco dance. As a pioneer in the use of the ‘bata de cola,’ she was a mysterious and versatile artist who sang while she danced. Rosario caught the attention of Manuel de Falla with legends and myths about gypsies, including her own life full of mysteries. She helped De Falla explore the zambra, the seguiriya, and the martinete, which inspired him to create “El Amor Brujo.”

The flamenco production “The Mysteries of Rosario” is a sober tribute, with a touch of humor, to this generation of female artists in a man’s world, full of suffering and misery. These pioneers, who dared to put on trousers to claim their rights to simply dance with their feet or raise their arms above their heads during the dance of the soleá, laid the foundations of contemporary flamenco dance.
